Who Was Charlie Case?

Charles Gregory Case (1945-2016)

Charles Gregory Case

Charles Gregory Case (1945-2016) was an anthropologist, educator, and philosopher from New Jersey. Born in Bayonne, he spent most of his career living in Hoboken, where he taught middle and high school history for more than 30 years at The Hudson School.

As a professor, Charlie taught anthropology and a variety of related subjects at Steven’s Institute of Technology and The New School, as well as lecturing at NYU. In addition to teaching, he founded and operated a successful symbols business, Braintree Associates, which designed symbols and logos for non-profits and charities.

Charlie was a passionately principled person, his values grounding him as a shining educator and community member. His principles also led him to ultimately resign from both high school and university positions in protest over abuses of power, and to forgo early opportunities for publication and career advancement.

Also due to his principles, Dr. Case, as he was known to many, kept much of his personal philosophy private during his tenure as a teacher; he created this site to make some of those thoughts public upon his retirement. Charlie expired (he preferred this wording) at home after a bout with cancer in February, 2016.

This site is being maintained in his memory by his son and several colleagues.
